Ms. Lyla, my sweet sweet 6 year old.  She was very excited to do some back to school shopping this year, more than previous years.  I thought it was fun, but I didn’t realize that hyped enthusiasm was foreshadowing a slight change in the way she and I shop.  We typically hit up a few stores, but I started at Osh Kosh B’Gosh because they have sturdy clothes that are built for play and are also super cute and the way they cut their styles really works for Lou’s shape.

Before we headed to OKB’G in the Folsom Outlets we talked about how she needed to try to find a color palette and try to keep to those colors or to complimentary colors.  Moms: this is my biggest back to school shopping tip.  It truly makes the mornings and the outfit pairing sooooo much easier because everything basically goes together.  I also told her we needed to get leggings to layer, she needed new shoes, and a warm topper.

So Osh Kosh has been known for decades because of their sturdy denim.  Well, we chose our denim in the form of chambray and it is truly fab!  So that helped to develop our color pallet: grey, navy, white, tan, and pink.  After that she asked if I would shop on the boy side with Brady and that she would check in with me.  What?  This has Never. Happened. Before.  But I went with it… and spied on her from the other side of the store.  It was priceless!  She would pick something up and check it out, hold it up to her, hold it up to a skirt or pants then look for her size.  Crazy.  After about 30 minutes of this she said she was ready to try on.  Wait, try on?  Here?  We’ve never really done that before.

Back to School Made Easy

Back to School Made Easy

Back to School Made Easy

I have been there, I’ve seen it!  I’ve seen those moms that roll up to school with coffee in hand, hair looking fab, outfit on point, and their kids look awake, fed, and happy to be leisurely walking into school.  Meanwhile there I am in workout clothes I picked up off the floor of my closet, (despite the fact that I have no actual intention of working out on that particular day) hurrying my kids across the parking lot because we are late, my daughter’s shoes are magically too small that morning and she is upset that she had to wear a different pair that doesn’t match.  And wonder, what did they do differently that morning?  What time did they get up???  How can I do that?

Well, one day I stopped wondering and I started planning.  Now, I’m the mom that’s on time (most of the time)!  I still mainly wear workout clothes, but that’s actually by choice.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m no where near perfect and I’m still late sometimes.  BUT, you GUYSSSSS!!!  I was so early getting out the door one day last week that I stopped and got coffee before I took my kiddos to school.  I mean, that was a blue ribbon day.

Here are the tips I’ve been employing in my household to get us all out the door on time and prepared.

Back to School Gifts and Supplies for Teachers

Back to School Gifts and Supplies for Teachers

For me, back to school starts this MONDAY!  So crazy.  In an attempt to get myself organized and start off the school year with my best foot forward I’ve been researching some simple and useful teacher’s gifts.  There are plenty of things that teachers get that they just don’t need or like as well as plenty of things that teachers actually need and want.  For example, don’t assume you know which scented candle your child’s teacher would enjoy.  Instead think about things all teacher’s need in their classrooms throughout the year: Sharpies, Ticonderoga pencils, twistable Crayola colored pencils and crayons, Clorox wipes, baby wipes, kleenex, 409, paper towels, and Expo dry erase markers and erasers.  These are things you can always give that are very useful.  And, if you’re just dying  to add a Pinterest-y touch, add one of the super cute free printable tags from this post and you are at the top of the class!

All Kinds of Kinds

All Kinds of Kinds

Thanks Miranda, “All Kinds of Kinds” is a good reminder for anyone in life, but especially for kids that are back to school and for parents with kids going back to school.  It can be tough to make friends, it can be tough to meet new people, teachers, and parents.  But without all kinds of kinds in the world, life would be boring.  Accept eccentricities, shyness, gregarious personalities, and the know-it-alls.  They all come together to create the tapestry of your life.

Back to School Lunches

collage

School lunches…that typically brings up mixed feelings in most mamas.  It’s a chore that can be a bore…  But we all have to do it.  Today was on Good Day Sacramento with the super fun Melissa to show you how to make the lunch chore easier and to give you a few fun new things to try!  You can see part 1 of the segment here and part 2 here.  I’m not talking about super elaborate bento box style lunches with falcon sculptures made of cheese.  Although, if you’re into that, that’s awesome!  I’m talking special touches that take seconds, giving dinners a new life, and displaying the typical lunch food in new ways.
